A Western Tanager sits calmly by the trailside as we hike in Glacier National Park. On a hike down from Iceberg Lake their colorful feathers were immediately spotted against the green of the tree they were perched in front of. This was my first ever time seeing a Western Tanager and froze once it was spotted. Would luck be on my side to be able to get a photo. It was a grueling hike so my camera was stowed in my backpack and I was sure I wouldn’t be able to remove it in time. But I had to try. I slowly removed it and they were calm enough to give me just a few moments of taking a few pictures before they flew off. What a luck day all around. My first time ever seeing this type of bird, it was nice enough to pick a great open perch to sit on, and being lucky enough to get a good photo of it. What a day.
