We tried to anticipate the movements of this female Alaskan Brown Bear in a remote part of Lake Clark National Park, Alaska but sometimes their movements are unpredictable. She was fishing for salmon across the river and we thought she would continue to do so. We did not think she would immediately cross the river in our direction, effortlessly climb up the steep river embankment, and emerge within about 25 feet from us. Once she did, we immediately realized her immense size and gave her a safe space to move away. But this was not before giving me a brief look while peering over the river embankment and where I was able to capture this photograph. Her size and presence were remarkable.
